Sustainability at Chestnut Brae: Nurturing Nature, Nourishing Health

At Chestnut Brae, sustainability isn’t just a trend — it’s at the heart of everything we do. Nestled in the rolling hills of the South West, our certified organic chestnut farm is a living example of how caring for the land can also care for our health, community, and future.

Here’s how we walk the talk — and why sustainability matters now more than ever.

🌱 Why Sustainability? Because Everything is Connected

In a world moving faster by the minute, many people are craving a return to what’s real, seasonal and grounded. And it turns out that the health of the earth and our personal wellbeing are closely linked.

  • Healthy soil grows nutritious food.
  • Clean air and water support thriving ecosystems.
  • Spending time in nature improves mental and physical health.

At Chestnut Brae, we believe in regenerating the land, not just using it — and the result is better, more nutritious food, richer biodiversity, and a more meaningful experience for every visitor.

🌿 Our Sustainable Farming Practices

We’re proud to be certified organic and focused on regenerative agriculture. Here’s what that looks like on our farm:

🌰 Chestnuts Grown Organically

Our chestnuts are grown without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides. Instead, we work with nature using compost, animals and biodiversity to maintain healthy soils and robust trees. Our animals rotate through the orchards to help maintain the grass levels, keep the suckers down, fertilise the orchards, but not over trample the soil. Our guinea fowl roam the orchards and gardens as our natural insect control.

🐖 Chestnut-Fed Pigs

Our pigs are rotated on pasture and fed a seasonal diet of fallen chestnuts, giving them a healthy life outdoors while improving soil health. They play a role in natural fertilisation and land regeneration, and nothing goes to waste — even their lard is used in our handmade skincare! The pigs are raised in small batches and rotated over the land to ensure the best life for them, and maximum benefits to the soil.

💧 Water-Wise & Waste-Free

We are blessed with several natural springs on the farm.  In addition, we harvest rainwater, mulch our orchards and gardens to reduce evaporation and return organic matter back into the soil wherever possible. Nothing is wasted — it’s all part of a closed-loop system.

🌾 A Farm that Supports Wildlife

Our orchard and gardens are a sanctuary for birds, bats, bees and beneficial insects. We maintain habitat corridors and flowering zones to support local biodiversity.  We installed a bat box to encourage the micro-bats on the farm, but they seem to prefer to find their own hideaways.  We also installed an insect hotel that we labelled “Bugingham Palace” to encourage insects and to educate visiting children about the importance of insect life.

🧴 Sustainable Products, Too

Our sustainability commitment goes beyond farming — it’s in our skincare range, too. Each product is crafted by hand using natural, local ingredients like chestnut tea oil, chestnut milk, beeswax, and pasture raised lard.  They’re gentle on your skin and free from synthetic chemicals, so they’re kinder to both people and the planet.  We use natural products wherever possible, including in our cleaning products.

🌏 Why It Matters

Sustainability isn’t just about protecting the environment — it’s about protecting our future. When you choose to support a sustainable farm like Chestnut Brae, you’re voting for:

  • Better health — through clean, chemical-free food
  • Healthy Soil – supporting and encouraging beneficial microorganisms in the soil ensures healthy soil, healthy crops and healthy people.
  • A cleaner planet — with less waste and pollution
  • A thriving local economy — that supports regenerative practices
  • Authentic experiences — that reconnect people to nature and each other
