The chestnuts are beginning to sense it’s time to burst their buds and come into leaf. The days are getting warmer, and the rains have lasted longer than last year. We’re hopeful this season will be kinder than the last.
With this change, the workload on the farm increases. We’ve finished pruning one of the orchards, and all the wood has been chipped on-site, ready to be used as garden mulch. Our sheep are doing their best to keep up with the grass, acting as our natural lawn mowers.
Next, we’ll be mulching the orchards, incorporating the chestnut burrs as a natural fertiliser. After that, we’ll tidy up fallen branches to ensure the orchard is easier to manage during next year’s harvest season.
This year, we’ve had fewer chestnuts due to last summer’s hot and dry weather, which has reduced the volume of products we can sell. Despite this, we’ve continued to have great success at the farmers’ markets we attend, and we’re still going strong.
We hope to keep attending markets until December, and we look forward to seeing you at one of them. We also have new products available, including natural hand lotion made right here on the farm, as well as chopping boards crafted from our own chestnut wood.
